Some festive cheer in the form of LEGO bricks arrived in Canberra today as a giant LEGO Christmas tree was set up in one lucky local family’s home.

Canberra residents Mel Bezear, Anthony McLauchlan and their son Oliver McLauchlan (age 9) were in the Christmas spirit when Ryan McNaught, Australia’s only LEGO Certified Professional, called in for a visit to set up a giant Christmas tree built entirely out of LEGO bricks.

The family are the winners of The Big Build, a national competition launched back in October that asked the public to submit ideas for what they wanted us to build with 50,000 LEGO bricks.

In what has become a well-loved family tradition, every year Mel, Anthony and Oliver build their own LEGO Christmas tree. When mum Mel heard about The Big Build, she thought it was the perfect opportunity to see their humble tree brought to life on a grand scale, and the Festival of Play judging team agreed!

The Christmas tree, which stands at 2m tall x 1.5m wide, was delivered to the family at their home in Wanniassa where they helped Ryan set it up and decorate it using a special gold LEGO star and LEGO brick presents to place underneath the tree.

The Big Build wraps up a great year of activity to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the LEGO brick in Australia.
